A creamy white cocktail in a coupe glass with a sugared and coconut rim

Ingredients

serving
  • 50 ml vodka — a clean, neutral style
  • 30 ml white chocolate liqueur — such as Mozart White
  • 30 ml coconut cream — well stirred
  • 20 ml single cream
  • 2 drops vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp caster sugar — for the rim
  • 0.5 tsp desiccated coconut — for the rim, optional
  • 1 wedge fresh lime — to wet the rim

Method

  1. Mix the caster sugar with the desiccated coconut on a small plate.
  2. Run the lime wedge around the rim of a chilled coupe, then dip the rim into the sugar mixture to create a snowy edge.
  3. Add the vodka, white chocolate liqueur, coconut cream, single cream and vanilla to a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
  4. Shake hard for around twenty seconds until the cocktail is properly chilled and slightly aerated.
  5. Double strain carefully into the prepared coupe, taking care not to disturb the rim, and serve straight away.

The White Christmas Cocktail is unapologetically pretty. It looks like a snow globe in a glass and tastes like the dessert trolley of a country house hotel, all white chocolate, coconut and vanilla, with just enough vodka to keep it honest. It belongs to that small family of festive drinks designed to be photographed before they are sipped.

Why coconut cream is non-negotiable

Coconut cream rather than coconut milk is the difference between a slightly thin cocktail and something properly velvety. It also gives the drink its trademark snowy whiteness, which a yellow-tinted dairy cream alone cannot achieve. Stir the tin or carton thoroughly before measuring so the fat is evenly distributed.

Building the snowy rim

A sugar rim turns this cocktail into a centrepiece. Mix caster sugar with a little desiccated coconut for texture, wet the rim of a chilled coupe with lime and press it gently into the mixture. Work over a plate to catch the excess and you will get a clean, even snowdrift around the glass. Keep the lime away from the inside of the glass so it does not interfere with the creamy flavour.

Serving suggestions

This is a drink for the slower part of the evening, after the main course rather than as an aperitif. It pairs beautifully with mince pies, almond biscuits or a single square of dark chocolate. Serve it ice cold, drink it slowly and resist the urge to add more liqueur, because the balance here is finer than it looks.

Frequently asked questions

What does a White Christmas Cocktail taste like?

It is rich and dessert-like with notes of vanilla, white chocolate and coconut, balanced by the clean kick of vodka. Think of it as a grown-up version of a snowball, made to pair with mince pies and shortbread.

Can I use coconut milk instead of coconut cream?

Coconut milk will work in a pinch but the cocktail will be looser and less luxurious. Coconut cream gives the snowy, satin texture that makes this drink feel properly festive.

Is there a non-dairy version?

Swap the single cream for a thick oat or almond cream and choose a plant-based white chocolate liqueur. The result is just as snow-white and only slightly lighter on the palate.
