The Pomegranate Christmas Martini is the cocktail your dining table has been waiting for. Its deep ruby colour catches the candlelight beautifully, and the flavour is sharper and more interesting than the average festive martini. Pomegranate gives it a tannic, almost wine-like depth, while triple sec softens the edges with a quiet hum of orange.

A note on pomegranate juice

The quality of the juice is what makes or breaks this cocktail. Freshly pressed juice from a couple of ripe pomegranates has a vivid, almost rosy character that is hard to replicate, but a good bottled juice with pomegranate as the only ingredient is an excellent shortcut. Avoid anything that lists added sugar or fruit blends, as they will dull the flavour.

Shake it cold and crisp

This is a drink that benefits from a hard, brisk shake. Plenty of ice and at least fifteen seconds of vigorous shaking gives you the icy chill, the slight aeration and the diluted edge that turn a strong cocktail into an elegant one. Double straining catches any small shards of ice so the surface stays clean for the lime twist.

Serving with style

The pomegranate seeds at the bottom of the glass are not just for show. As you sip the cocktail, they release tiny bursts of fresh juice that keep the flavour evolving from the first sip to the last. Serve the martini ice cold, drink it slowly and enjoy the way the colour fades as the glass empties.

Frequently asked questions

Should the pomegranate juice be freshly pressed?

Freshly pressed juice gives the cleanest, most vibrant flavour, but a good quality bottled juice that lists pomegranate as the only ingredient works extremely well. Avoid sweetened pomegranate drinks.

What does triple sec add to the cocktail?

Triple sec brings a bittersweet orange note that lifts the pomegranate and brightens the finish. Cointreau is the gold standard but any good triple sec will do the job.

Can I make a batch for a dinner party?

Yes, combine the vodka, pomegranate juice, lime, triple sec and syrup in a sealed jug and keep cold in the fridge. Shake individual portions with ice as you serve so the texture stays icy and crisp.
