Spiced Apple & Orange Warmer
An alcohol-free winter warmer — cloudy apple juice gently mulled with orange, cinnamon and clove. Fragrant, comforting and good for all ages.
Ingredients
- 500 ml cloudy apple juice
- 1 orange — half juiced, half sliced
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 3 whole cloves
- 1 star anise
- 1 tsp honey or maple syrup — optional, to taste
Method
- Pour the apple juice and orange juice into a small pan and add the cinnamon, cloves and star anise.
- Warm gently until steaming — around 65°C — and hold for 10 minutes so the spices infuse. Don't let it boil.
- Taste and add a little honey or maple syrup if you'd like it sweeter.
- Strain into mugs and add an orange slice to each.
How to serve
- Glassware
- Heatproof mug
- Serve temperature
- Warm, around 60–65°C

- Orange slice, cinnamon stick
A good alcohol-free winter drink should feel like a proper serve, not a consolation. This spiced apple and orange warmer delivers the whole sensory ritual of a mulled drink — the steam, the citrus, the warm spice — with nothing but fruit juice and spices in the pan. It’s the one to make when the whole household, or a designated driver, wants something warming in hand.
Tips
- Use cloudy apple juice. It gives the drink body and a real orchard depth.
- Warm gently. Around 65°C lets the spices infuse without dulling the fresh fruit.
- Balance the sweetness. A little lemon or extra orange keeps it lively if your juice is very sweet.
Variations
- Gingered: add two thin slices of fresh ginger for warmth and bite.
- Berry: a handful of cranberries or a splash of pomegranate juice adds tartness and colour.

Frequently asked questions
Can I make this in larger quantities for a party?
Yes — it scales perfectly. Multiply everything, warm it in a large pan or slow cooker on the lowest setting, and let guests ladle their own. Keep it below a simmer so it stays bright rather than stewed.
What's the best apple juice to use?
Cloudy, unsweetened apple juice has far more body and orchard flavour than clear, filtered juice. If yours is very sweet, a squeeze of lemon keeps it balanced.
