The hot toddy is, at heart, about comfort — and most of that comfort comes from the honey, lemon, spice and warmth rather than the whisky. This alcohol-free version keeps everything that makes a toddy soothing and simply leaves out the spirit, building the body back with strong black tea instead.

Tips

  • Brew the tea strong. It needs enough backbone to carry the honey and lemon; a weak cup tastes thin.
  • Don’t use boiling-hot liquid on the lemon. Just-off-the-boil keeps it from turning bitter.
  • Add ginger for warmth. A couple of slices give the gentle heat the whisky would otherwise provide.

Variations

  • Apple toddy: swap the tea for warm cloudy apple juice.
  • Spiced: add a clove or two and a thin strip of orange peel.
  • Caffeine-free: use rooibos or a herbal infusion in place of black tea.

A mug of this is the easiest way to take the edge off a cold evening — no spirits required.

Frequently asked questions

What can I use instead of whisky in a hot toddy?

Strong black tea is the classic stand-in — it brings warmth, colour and a little tannin that mimics the body of the spirit. Warm cloudy apple juice or a splash of an alcohol-free spirit work well too.

Is a hot toddy good for a cold?

It won't cure anything, but the honey, lemon and warm liquid are genuinely soothing for a scratchy throat — which is exactly why people have reached for toddies for generations. Enjoy it for the comfort.
