Ingredient
Sloe Gin
A lightly sweet, ruby-tinted gin liqueur made by steeping sloes — naturally autumnal, and a quietly excellent warm-cocktail ingredient.
Flavour profile
Sloe gin is one of the most underused winter ingredients on the British shelf. Made by steeping wild sloe berries in gin with sugar, it tastes naturally of late autumn — plum, marzipan, a little tannic edge — and warms beautifully without losing its colour or character. A measure in a hot toddy turns it into something more interesting; a long pour over warm cider is an evening on its own.
